Our Team

Beeswax candlemaking is a learned craft, and over the past 14 years, Barletta has had a rich and diverse mix of makers who have helped make us and continue to help make us who we are today.   In future months, we will do some introductions to our wonderful team members and some of their favourite things about working in our creative wax studio.

Our Studio

The Barletta studio is located on Treaty One land, the original lands and waters of Anishinaabe (Ojibwe/Saulteaux), Ininiwak (Swampy Cree), Nehethowuk (Rocky Cree), Anishininiwak (Ojibwa-Cree), Dakota, and Denesuline (Dene) peoples, and on the homeland of the Red River Métis Nation.  Our water comes from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.  We are grateful to the First Nations of Treaty One & Two who agreed to share this beautiful prairie land as well as to the land itself (and the water, plants & trees, animals & insects, sunlight, and sky) where we source our beeswax, giving us the opportunity to create natural wax candles and products for you.  Miigwetch!

Our creative wax studio is situated close to the banks of the Assiniboine river along an unexpected lane in the center of  Winnipeg, an ancient place of exchange where 2 great rivers meet.  We are a studio, not a shop, but welcome visitors to come see what we are up to!  Our studio is akin to a beehive, that when you open it up there is a level of activity and energy revealed that is not so evident from its humble exterior.    We are usually bustling with ideas, projects, tools, spools of wick, small mountains of beeswax, pots of tea…. Our “tiny house studio” where everything needs its place in order to make use of every square centimetre is sometimes described by visitors as a  “secret candle laboratory” or like “Santas workshop”    Contact us if you are in town and would like to arrange a visit!

"We have the responsibility to create our own little magic worlds in a world that needs a little more magic"

Yes to this! We can relate to this quote from a chef on S3 E10 of The Bear (series about the world of haute cuisine restaurants, Michelin stars and gastronomy)

Our Vision for the future

Of course, there is a larger dream of a studio that would allow us to stretch our wings and do more of what we are capable, to be a bit further afield in the tall grasses, and have a pollinator garden with beehives, long tables for honey tasting, and workshops of all kinds.  Room to instruct and employ another generation of chandlers to meet the growing demand for what we do, and dedicated space for artistic and scientific explorations of all kinds centred around natural waxes, bees, and plant materials. To expand this magic world of intersections of materials, and the intersections of the ancient past and innovations for what is required in this modern world we all share. If you are interested to contribute and be a part of this vision, we want to hear from you!
